The Crew has been a fixture at Camp Opemikon since 1959.
The Opemikon Crew is the oldest running Rover Crew in the Voyager Council,
with over 45 years of service to the camp.
For several decades the Opemikon Rover Crew had "under age" members that were really Venturer age.
Although under age, they were accepted into the Crew as "squires" until they reached 18, with all the same rights as older members.
The reason was if the Crew only had above 18 year olds, due to people going to college, university and other reasons, there would not be enough members to do all the work at Camp.
This situation changed around 2001 when the leadership of Scouts Canada would no longer permit underage Rover to be registered.
To solve this problem the Crew created the Opemikon Venturer Company.
After some growing pains, the Company and Crew work as one section and the only difference being if the member gets a blue or red crest upon investiture.
Due to historical reasons of over 40 years as being a Rover Crew, many terms have remained "Rover" terms but do apply to the Company and Crew.
In particular, it is still common place to refer to the Opemikon Venturer Company / Rover Crew as just "The Crew".
Rovers are the last youth section of Scouting for youth ages 18 to 25 years old.
The motto of Rovers is "Service" and the Crew's service project is Camp Opemikon.
Potential members of the Company / Crew are asked to join by current members.
After a trial period, if the crew and the invited member,
known as a squire, both agree, the new member is invested into the crew.
Each member of the crew is expected to come to camp for at least three
weekends during the off-season, not including the annual work weekend.
The Crew does catering for groups that come up to Camp, activities with the groups,
maintenance of the camp, life guarding and anything else that needs to be done.
The Crew usually has members at Camp on the weekends from September to May.
The Crew has never been paid and continues to volunteer its services to Camp and Scouts.
